Comparing Alternative Algorithms to Analyze the Beerkan Infiltration Experiment
2014
The increasing interest in the Beerkan Estimation of Soil Transfer parameters (BEST) procedure of soil hydraulic characterization justifies an assessment of alternative methods to analyze infiltration data. The BEST-slope and BEST-intercept algorithms allow estimation of soil sorptivity, S, and saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, Ks, using the transient part of the experimental infiltration curve and the slope and the intercept, respectively, of the linear portion of this curve. With reference to 401 runs performed in Sicily (Italy) and Burundi, this investigation showed that these two algorithms differed by the number of successful runs (positive S and Ks values), with BEST-intercept yi…
Optimal local control and tolerability of three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy in prostate cancer: A single institutional experience of dose…
2013
Aims To evaluate long-term late side effects, clinical and biochemical relapse in non-metastatic prostate cancer patients treated with dose escalation, from 74 to 78 Gy, by means of three dimensional conformal radiation therapy. Materials and Methods Clinical data of 125 patients with prostate cancer who underwent three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy were retrospectively evaluated. All patients were stratified, according to the NCCN classification, in low, intermediate and high risk, and all of them showed histologically proven adenocarcinoma stage T1–T3 with at least 2 years of follow-up. Late toxicity was analyzed using a modified Radiation Therapy Oncology Group toxicity scale. …

Canopy Architecture Appraisal by Fractal Dimension of 'Flordastar' Peach Trees Grafted onto Different Rootstocks
2007
The objective of this research was to evaluate the modification of canopy architecture of ''Flordastar'' peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch) grafted onto rootstocks with different vigour, by the use of fractal dimension (D). The hypothesis was that different vigour rootstocks are able to modify the complexity of the branching pattern and that this effect can be assessed by a geometric parameter such as the fractal dimension (D) of the 2D projection of tree branching structure. The observations were carried out in a four-year-old experimental orchard of cv. ''Flordastar'' peach trees grafted onto Ishtara, Barrier, GF677 and MrS 2/5 rootstocks. On digital pictures of leafless, dormant peach tree…
Multiplane two-dimensional versus real time three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography in ischemic mitral regurgitation
2011
OBJECTIVES: Intraoperative three-dimensional (3D) transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has been suggested to be a valuable technique for the evaluation of the mechanisms of ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR). Studies comparing multiplane two-dimensional (2D) with 3D TEE reconstruction of the mitral valve using the new mitral valve quantification (MVQ) software are lacking. We undertook a prospective comparison between multiplane 2D and 3D TEE for the assessment of IMR. METHODS: We evaluated echocardiographically 45 patients with IMR who underwent mitral valve surgery in our institution. 2D and 3D TEE examinations followed by a 3D offline assessment of the mitral valve apparatus were perf…
Development of an in vitro neuroblastoma 3D model and its application for sterigmatocystin-induced cytotoxicity testing
2021
Abstract Given the increasing importance of establishing better risk assessments for mycotoxins, novel in vitro tools for the evaluation of their toxicity are mandatory. In this study, an in vitro 3D spheroid model from SH-SY5Y cells, a human neuroblastoma cell line, was developed, optimized and characterized to test the cytotoxic effects caused by the mycotoxin sterigmatocystin (STE). STE induced a concentration- and time-dependent cell viability decrease in spheroids. Spheroids displayed cell disaggregation after STE exposure, increasing in a dose-dependent manner and over time. STE also induced apoptosis as confirmed by immunofluorescence staining and Western blot. Following the decrease…
